High Design, Low Impact: Creating LivingHomes

STEVE GLENN is the founder and CEO of LivingHomes, LLC, a developer of modern, prefabricated homes that combine world-class architecture with a commitment to healthy and sustainable construction. The first LivingHome, designed by Ray Kappe, FAIA, was installed in eight hours. It became the first home ever to receive a LEED for Home Platinum rating and was the only home to win the AIA’s top sustainability award in 2007. Before LivingHomes, Glenn worked with the Clinton HIV/AIDS Initiative (CHAI). Glenn was a founding partner of idealab, a business incubation firm that founded or invested in a number of successful companies including GoTo/Overture (OVER), NetZero/United Online, CitySearch, Tickets.com, eToys and CarsDirect. He worked for Walt Disney Imagineering as co-director of the Virtual Reality Studio and co-founded Clearview Software, which was sold to Apple Computer where he later served as a marketing specialist. Glenn teaches courses at Pepperdine Business School and California State University, Long Beach. He was named the Clean Tech CEO of the Year in 2008 by Clean Tech Week, and Environmental Entrepreneur of the Year in 2009 by LA City Council/Faith2Green.

Authenticity, Culture and the Kimchi Taco

JONATHAN GOLD is the LA Weekly's restaurant critic and the author of "Counter Intelligence: Where to Eat in the Real Los Angeles." He has been restaurant critic for California, the Los Angeles Times, Los Angeles and Gourmet, and he has won James Beard Awards for both magazine and newspaper restaurant reviews. Gold also wrote frequently about music and popular culture for Spin, Rolling Stone, Details and Vanity Fair, and contributes to the radio shows Good Food and This American Life. In 2007, he became the first food writer to win the Pulitzer Prize in criticism.

Jeremy Mende is the principal of the San Francisco-based visual communications firm Mende Design, a multidisciplinary design group that specializes in exploring the relationship between the surface of communication and the underlying semiotic structures that generate it.

He is an adjunct professor at the California College of the Arts (CCA), teaching experimental typography and critical theory. He has recently been awarded the Franklin D. Israel Rome Prize.

His work has received several national design awards from the AIGA, the Type Director's Club, the Art Director's Club, and Communication Arts, Print, and HOW magazines. He has been featured in several international design books, exhibitions, and publications. He currently has work in the permanent collection of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
