Students playing soccer near Hillside's sculpture garden.
“We used to play volleyball by the sculpture garden—the court is gone, but students still play sports there today. The volleyball court was right beside the ravine, and the ball constantly rolled down the hill and into a patch of poison oak. After retrieving the volleyball, we would bounce the ball off of President Kubly’s office window, then point at the poison oak on our arms. Finally, one day he put up a fence to stop the ball from rolling down into the ravine. But the fence was only a foot or so tall, so it never really stopped the ball. It looked nice, but it was a bit too minimal.”
