PROFILE

Architectural RecordRichard Koshalek's love of architecture and design is evident in his one year as president at Art Center. He has hired Frank Gehry to redesign the campus and Hodgetts and Fung have already started work on the student lounge. These projects will help facilitate better campus communication and foster an environment for creative thinking. Koshalek says that his long term goals for Art Center include "establishing the campus as a center of dialogue about what happens in the world of design and fine arts internationallynot only in terms of educating students for the future but also being an advocate in the larger world for what we believe in, which is the value of design." Optimistic, and ambitious, goals.

ADVERTISING

AdweekThe Clios, the world's most famous advertising awards competition, handed out 253 grand, gold, silver and bronze statuettes recognizing the best in television, radio, interactive, print, poster and design work. Over 18,000 entries from 67 countries were received. A gold Clio for television work was given to Art Center College of Design for its campaign for New Balance. Alum Jeff Goodby of Goodby, Silverstein & Partners was recognized with a gold Clio for the agency's radio advertisement for client Budweiser.

Advertising AgeWayne Best, previously of Cliff Freeman & Partners, is the new partner of Dweck! An Art Center graduate, Best began his career at the shop then called Amirati Puris Lintas in New York as an art director. After two years, he transferred to Freeman where he stayed for four and a half years before moving to Dweck! "I've always liked the work here," he said of Dweck! "It's a good opportunity for me. Michael (Dweck) is a character and that's good in advertising."

TRANSPORTATION

Automotive NewsFive designing couples offered their viewpoints on living and working together in the automotive world. Two of the five couples met while students at Art Center. Tom and Carolyn Peters have worked side by side for a variety of companies on a variety of projects, including marine navigation instruments, early laptop computers and educational tools for children with disabilities. Following the birth of their first child after seven years of marriage, Carolyn is doing consulting work from their home and Tom is chief vehicle designer for GM. Graduates Robb McCann and Amy Hiroshige work for different automakers, but find other things to talk about when they get home at the end of the day. Shared interests include Latin jazz and blues music, cooking, and furniture design.

AutoweekBryan Nesbitt may be less than enthusiastic to talk about the attention he's received since designing this year's hottest new car, the PT Cruiser for Chrysler, but when it comes to talking about the philosophy behind the design itself, he has much to say. He eagerly points to the styling features, five speed engine, and customized 18-inch wheels and tires. Chrysler is eager to promote him as a young J Mays with a spiky 'do, but he is more interested in providing an entry level car that doesn't look like an entry level car.

GRAPHICS

AGFA/MonotypeThe recently published work Fonts & Logos by instructor and lettering and logo artist Doyald Young received kudos as a "rich, engaging and multifaceted book on the letter arts." By first establishing the language of the book by introducing the historical context of various typeface classification systems, the chronology of typography in the European tradition, presenting a taxonomy of letter parts and finally defining the function of a logo, Young brings the reader up to speed before launching into the dissection of various letter forms. Reflections of favorite forms and the concluding, "How I Work," section add a personal, intimate flavor to this detailed study of letterforms and their relationships.
