The Kiss, 1999
Sabina Daley is a digital artist and writer, and a recent graduate of the MFA Computer Art Department at School of Visual Arts. The Kiss has been written about in Leonardo magazine, the New York Times, and New York Magazine online
The Kiss is a narrative of relationship between human and machine, but it evokes the opposite of the computer protagonist in Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey. Whereas the film's corrupted computer mentality, "Hal" was calculating and sinister, The Kiss's "Maya" is a beguiling seductress, slipping in and out of a yearning for contact with humans. The elusive computer presence speaks of our wary courtship with technology - a relationship that is both uncertain and gratifying.
